Athletes from 40 Countries Join The 2023 Bali Biathle/Triathle World Championships

JABAR EKSPRES – Chairman of Modern Pentathlon Indonesia (MPI) Anthony Charles Sunarjo said no less than 500 athletes from 40 countries will take part in the 2023 Biathle/Triathle World Championship at Mengiat Beach, Nusa Dua, Bali, on November 1-5.

“No less than 500 athletes from 40 countries and five continents will be present in Bali to take part in the world championship which is under the umbrella of the Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne (UIPM) organization. The maximum number of participants is four people from each country,” Anthony said in a written statement in Jakarta, Thursday (7/6).

He revealed that Indonesia became the first Asian country to hold the 2023 Biathle / Triathle World Championship.

Biathle is a beach sport that combines running and swimming. Then triathle is a combined branch of shooting, swimming, and running.

“For triathle, the match starts with shooting. Athletes must hit the target five times with unlimited shots. Then pass through the transition area to swim and continue with running,” said Anthony.

As part of the modern sport of pentathlon or modern pancalomba, the UIPM Biathle/Triathle World Championship in Bali will compete in five classes in three sports, namely swimming 200 meters and running 800 meters (biathle), then shooting five targets within 50 seconds, swimming 200 meters, and ending with running 800 meters (triathle).

In addition, there are 10 categories of matches based on age groups. Starting from Under 11, Under 13, Under 15, Under 17, Under 19, Juniors, Seniors, Masters 40+, Masters 50+, and Masters 60+.

Biathle and triathle, continued Anthony, are part of modern pentathlon, one of the sports competed in the Olympics. Overall, modern pentathlon competes in five sports at once in one championship.

“Apart from shooting, swimming and running, there is fencing and horse riding. All modern pentathlon athletes must master these five sports disciplines, even though fencing and horse riding are not competed in Bali,” said Anthony.
