Indonesian Embassy in Seoul Says Emergency Alert has been Lifted

JABAR EKSPRES – The Indonesian Embassy in Seoul, South Korea, said the emergency alert issued by the local city government due to the missile launch in North Korea has been lifted.

At around 6:32 a.m. local time, residents and tourists using South Korean mobile numbers received an emergency warning to evacuate immediately.

A few minutes later, the South Korean Ministry of Public Administration and Security stated that the previous warning issued by the Seoul City Government was a false announcement.

At 07:25 local time, the Indonesian Embassy in Seoul received information that the emergency warning issued by the Seoul City Government was due to a missile launch by North Korea.

“The information also states that the ‘Wartime Alert’ for all areas in the city of Seoul has been lifted and residents of the city of Seoul are expected to carry out activities as usual,” Indonesian Ambassador to South Korea Gandi Sulistiyanto said via instant message to reporters, monitored from Seoul, Wednesday (5/31).

Activities in Seoul since the emergency warning have been running as usual.

Authorities on South Korea’s border with North Korea detected a missile launch in Dongchang-ri, North Korea’s west coast at 06:29 local time. The projectile passed over the waters far west of the border of South Korea’s Baengyeong Island.

The missile launch had no impact on South Korean territory.

“The South Korean government is currently only giving warnings, but has not put it in the extraordinary category. Some of the warning messages that appeared have been revised by the relevant authorities,” Gandi said.

Gandi also said that the Indonesian Embassy in Seoul already has a standard operating procedure (SOP) for emergencies, including the evacuation of citizens in case of emergency.

“The Indonesian Embassy will continue to monitor this development and report at the first opportunity,” Gandi said.
