World’s First Death Case From H3N8 Bird Flu in Guangdong Province, China

JABAR EKSPRES – First death case by the cause of the H3N8 Bird Flu reported by the Chinese health officials.

A 56-year-old woman in Guangdong Province, Southeast China, died because of the H3N8 Bird Flu, confirmed by the World Health Organization (WHO), Tuesday (11/04).

According to reports from Guangdong Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention (GPCDCP), the woman was found infected by the virus with a history of plasma cell cancer in the bone marrow also had contacts with living poultry and wild birds around her house.

The woman suffered early symptom of the H3N8 Bird Flu on 22nd February. WHO said that she was treated at home ten days after her first symptom because of heavy pneumonia.

“She was treated at the hospital because of heavy pneumonia on March 3rd and died on March 16th,” WHO said.

The illness was reported on March 26th by the health officials in Zhongshan City, China. The case was reported to WHO the next day by The National Health Commission after confirmed as H3N8 Bird Flu.

The woman became the third case of the H3N8 Bird Flu infection that was reported in China. WHO said that H3N8 or avian influenza A virus has a low risk of spreading at the national and international levels.

“Based on available information, it seems like the virus doesn’t have any ability to spread easily from people to people, So, the risk of spreading between humans on national, regional, and international levels considered low.”

Even though, this case emphasizes the importance of global surveillance to detect virological, epidemiological, and clinical changes associated with influenza viruses that may harm humans or animals.
