Indonesian Foreign Minister Explains ASEAN’s Role in Maintaining Peace

At the Oslo Forum, Retno also provided the latest information on developments in Myanmar.

She mentioned that one of the important elements of the Five-Point Consensus is the approach and dialogue that Indonesia continues to pursue as chair of ASEAN to help resolve the crisis in Myanmar, which was triggered by a military coup against an elected government.

For almost six months, Retno said, Indonesia has conducted more than 70 engagements with almost all parties in Myanmar.

“Indeed, these engagements did not appear in the headlines news because Indonesia chose not to do megaphone diplomacy,” she said.

Indonesia believes that the approach taken will create mutual trust, which will be a very important basic capital to be able to conduct dialog between the conflicting parties in Myanmar.

“Indonesia is also engaging with Myanmar’s neighboring countries so that their policies support the efforts being made by ASEAN,” Retno said.

Together with the Colombian Foreign Minister and the CEO of the International Crisis Group, Retno was invited as the main speaker in the plenary session of the forum in Oslo.

The invitation is inseparable from Indonesia’s active role in encouraging and striving for peace, including in Myanmar and Afghanistan, she said.
