Alonso Lost The Podium at The Saudi Arabian Grand Prix

JABAR EKSPRES — Aston Martin team driver Fernando Alonso missed out on the podium at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix on Sunday following an additional 10-second penalty for being caught doing the previous one incorrectly.

Alonso took the lead heading into the first corner of the Jeddah Corniche Circuit after starting from P2 — moved up by Charles Leclerc’s penalty — but was awarded the first penalty for not properly positioning the car on the grid before the start.

The Spaniard served an additional five-second penalty during a pit stop during the Safety Car period following a technical malfunction by teammate Lance Stroll who was forced to stop on the side of the track.

Withstanding the onslaught of Mercedes duo George Russell and Lewis Hamilton, Alonso finished the 50-lap race in third place behind race champions Sergio Perez and Max Verstappen who reaffirmed Red Bull’s dominance.

After celebrating his 100th career podium, Alonso found stewards had carried out further investigations and then handed him a second penalty.

The supervisor of Saudi Arabian Grand Prix discovered that when Alonso was serving the five-second penalty, the jack for levering the rear of the driver’s car for a tire change had touched the AMR23 before the five-second penalty was applied.

The same thing happened to Alpine racer Esteban Ocon in Bahrain two weeks ago.

Stewards then awarded Alonso a 10-second penalty after the race, dropping his finish to P4 and George Russell inheriting the podium for Mercedes, according to the official F1 website.
