4,188 Inhabitants of South Kalimantan District Affected by Floods

JABAR EKSPRES — According to the Regional Disaster Reduction Board (BPBD), at least 1,340 houses were flooded and 4,188 residents were affected by the floods in Hulu Sungai Tengah district of South Kalimantan on Thursday (16/3).

Hulu Sungai Tengah BPBD chief, H. Budi Hariyanto, said on Friday (17/3) that among the affected residents in Barabai, 162 people were evacuated.

According to Haryanto, heavy rains and flooding of rivers in mountainous areas caused flooding in several villages in Hantakan, Batu Benawa, Balabai, Pandawan and Haryan districts, South Kalimantan.

“In five sub-districts there are he 11 villages that are still flooded,” he noted.

In addition, he noted that floods are still flooding 10 places of worship, 9 schools, 5 offices, a local health center and 2 markets.

“Water levels have risen in Barabai since this morning, but it is expected to be hot today and the floodwaters will recede soon,” he said.

The city of Haryanto urged residents in flood-affected areas to secure their valuables and evacuate as soon as water levels rise.

“Our police officers, supported by volunteers, are always on standby to assist residents in need of assistance and evacuation, and monitor the drainage situation,” he said.

Hulu Sungai Tengah BPBD is coordinating with social services, military (TNI), police, and district and village government officials to deal with flood impacts and build public kitchens. Meanwhile, the district social welfare office has set up public kitchens to support care for affected residents.

“Last night, in order to reach out to the residents of Hantakan and Halyan districts and to prepare in Balabai district, Juan He installed a public kitchen in Balabai building,” said Wahyudi Rahmad.
