JABAR EKSPRES – Health expert who is a member of the Indonesian Orthopaedic & Traumatology Specialist Association Dr. Widyastuti Srie Utami, Sp. OT (K) said scoliosis only causes continuous back pain.
“Most large degrees of scoliosis will cause the patient to have continuous back pain and the appearance of the back looks asymmetrical,” she said in Jakarta, Monday (8/21).
According to Widyastuti, symptoms such as radiating pain, numbness or tingling to the legs, feeling like they are concentrated to the legs and weakness are not signs of scoliosis. Widyastuti explained that the symptoms could be due to other health conditions such as a pinched nerve but this requires further examination by a doctor.

“If there are complaints other than soreness, don’t diagnose it as scoliosis. Make sure to see a doctor, it could be a spinal problem,” said he who practices at Pondok Indah Hospital – Pondok Indah.
Scoliosis is a condition in which the spine curves abnormally towards the side. This condition is often experienced by children of pre-pubertal age and many occur without any known cause (idiopathic).
Based on gender, females are known to experience this condition more but the cause has not yet been found.
Speaking of features on the body that can be suspected of scoliosis, one of them is the height of the back between the right and left that is different, but in some cases the back height is the same. In addition, the right or left elbow that is not attached to the waist can also be a sign that leads to scoliosis.
However, once again, Widyastuti reminded that although scoliosis can be seen, further examination is also needed to determine the angle of the spinal curve and determine the next treatment.
She added that scoliosis left untreated risks damaging posture, causing prolonged back pain, disrupting lung and heart function, and damaging spinal nerves.
