Denmark: Quran Blasphemy Ban will not Limit Freedom of Expression

JABAR EKSPRES – Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen on Thursday said that banning the desecration of holy books such as the Quran would not limit freedom of expression in the country.

Frederiksen made the statement in an interview with Danish weekly newspaper Weekendavisen following a series of Quran desecration incidents in the country.

In recent months, there have been repeated acts of arson and desecration of the holy Quran by Islamophobic activists and groups, particularly in northern Europe and Scandinavian countries.

Members of the ultranationalist Danske Patrioter or Danish Patriot group on Thursday committed another blasphemy against the Quran. The group desecrated the Muslim holy book for the fourth consecutive day in the capital Copenhagen.

The group had previously burned copies of the Quran in front of the embassies of Turkey, Iraq, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Iran under police protection, chanting slogans against Islam and unfurling anti-Islam banners.

With the rampant desecration of the Quran, Denmark is considering the option to start considering a ban on burning the Quran or other holy books in the country.

Denmark will examine the possibility of state intervention in special situations where, for example, other countries, cultures and religions are insulted, in order to prevent negative consequences for state security, the Danish government said in a statement on Monday (7/31).

“Denmark condemns the recent Quran burning and is examining the possibility of intervening in special situations regarding Danish freedom of expression,” Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen said via social media X, formerly Twitter.
