Nearly 50 Dead, Thousands Displaced by Floods in South Korea

JABAR EKSPRES – A week of heavy rains and flooding in South Korea has killed nearly 50 people and displaced thousands more, local authorities said.

According to data released by the Disaster Management and Safety Center on Thursday, some 2,278 public and private facilities across the country were damaged during the rains and floods that hit the country last week, Yonhap reported.

The heavy rains have also caused at least 33,000 hectares of farmland to be flooded and 797,000 livestock to die.

In addition to causing 46 deaths, heavy rains in South Korea have also left four people missing in several regions, including a marine who died on Wednesday (July 19) after being swept away by floodwaters while conducting search and rescue operations in the Yecheon area, which is 161 kilometers from Seoul.

Meanwhile, more than 3,100 displaced people are still living in shelter camps, according to the report.

South Korean Prime Minister Han Duck-soo on Thursday visited North Chungcheong Province. At least 14 people in the central city of Cheongju were killed by an overflowing river that caused an embankment to break.

“I feel deeply responsible for these deaths,” Han said.

The government has also mobilized about 10,000 soldiers across the country to assist local governments in conducting search and rescue operations.
