JABAR EKSPRES – China hopes South Korea will not play a double-standard role in its non-permanent membership of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2024-2025 period.
“We hope China will utilize its membership in the UNSC by rejecting confrontation and double standards,” Chinese Foreign Ministry (MFA) spokesman Wang Wenbin said in Beijing on Thursday.
He explained that the UNSC is the most important element of the international collective security mechanism and is responsible for the maintenance of global peace and security.
“The international community sincerely hopes that the UNSC will fulfill its mandate, play a role, and facilitate political solutions to global and regional issues,” he said.
It also expects South Korea to uphold equality, justice, freedom, and encourage dialogue, cooperation and mutual trust among UNSC members.

South Korea is also expected to be able to contribute to the UNSC through concrete actions.
South Korea returned to the UNSC in 11 years after last sitting on the council in the 2013-2014 period and the third time out of 10 non-permanent members because it had also previously been in the same position in 1996-1997.
South Korea won a seat on the council after garnering 180 votes from 192 UN member states present at the assembly.
South Korea’s election as the last non-permanent member of the UNSC comes as North Korea, a key ally of China, has recently stepped up the development of its nuclear and missile programs.
South Korea and Japan were also concerned about Chinese and Russian air patrol exercises over the Sea of Japan and East China Sea on Tuesday (6/6).
