Pekanbaru City Government Discusses Handling LGBT Issues in Schools

Jabar Ekspres – The Pekanbaru City Government in Riau Province is discussing efforts to handle lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) issues in the school environment following the emergence of LGBT-related chat groups among elementary school students.

“Today we got more extreme information, the elementary school group already has LGBT. So next week, together with Setda and Disdik, we will hold a meeting with all principals of junior high schools, elementary schools, and even PAUD,” said Acting Mayor of Pekanbaru Muflihun in Pekanbaru, Monday.

He reminded parents to monitor their children’s development and socialization to avoid environmental factors that could influence their sexual orientation.

“With the hope that the name of this child at home is a parent, at school it is a teacher. We hope the child can be monitored, can be seen,” he said.

“LGBT is difficult to handle. Because people see men and men together, people see it as if they are friends, so it is difficult to handle it,” he said.

He said that the city government is seeking the Education Office to include local content subject matter aimed at preventing sexual orientation deviations.

In addition, Muflihun asked religious leaders in Pekanbaru City to jointly build a massive movement to convey that in religion LGBT is forbidden and is a form of crime.

“We are now slowly asking for this. We have even conveyed this to MUI on a massive scale, be it in mosques, it can be conveyed about the role of parents in responding to the role of LGBT in Pekanbaru,” he said.

The Ministry of Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection has received information about LGBT groups among elementary school students, which was discovered when teachers raided students’ cellphones.

The ministry has asked the Pekanbaru City Government to trace the LGBT conversation group among elementary school students.
