JABAR EKSPRES – The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said that a shallow earthquake in the Mojokerto area, East Java, was triggered by an active fault that has not been mapped.
“The Mojosari, Mojokerto earthquake with a magnitude of 4.6 tonight was triggered by uncharted active fault activity. This earthquake is not located on the Surabaya Fault line,” BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Center Head Daryono said, Monday.
He added that the epicenter of the earthquake in the Mojokerto area that occurred at 20:44:01 WIB was also located outside the Kendeng Fault zone.
He said the 4.6 magnitude earthquake was located on land, precisely 10 km northeast of Mojokerto Regency, East Java at a depth of 9 km, or located at coordinates 7.49 south latitude and 112.54 east longitude.
“By paying attention to the location of the epicenter and the depth of the hypocenter, the earthquake that occurred was a type of shallow earthquake due to active fault activity with a strike-slip mechanism,” he explained.
He added that the earthquake that occurred at 20:44:01 WIB was felt in Mojokerto with a scale of III-IV MMI (modified mercally intensity), meaning that during the day it was felt by many people in the house, outside by several people, pottery broke, windows / doors rattled and walls rang.
The quake was also felt in Pasuruan, Surabaya, Lamongan, Gresik on a scale of III MMI (Vibration was felt in the house, it felt as if a truck was passing by).
Then in the Sidoarjo, Lawang areas with a scale of II-III MMI (Vibration felt by several people, light objects hanging swayed, felt vibrations as if a truck passed)
“Until now there have been no reports of damage caused by the earthquake,” he said.
Until 21:00 WIB, Daryono said that the results of BMKG monitoring have not shown any aftershock activity.
He reminded the public to remain vigilant. Based on historical records, a destructive earthquake had occurred in Mojokerto in 1834 with intensity reaching VII-VIII MMI (heavy damage).
