Chen Yu Fei Reveals the Fierce Competition in Women’s Singles

JABAR EKSPRES – Chinese badminton athlete Chen Yu Fei thinks the competition in the world women’s singles is currently so fierce.

This follows the world’s top four women’s singles, namely Akane Yamaguchi (Japan), An Se Young (South Korea), Tai Tzu Ying (Taiwan), and Chen taking turns to win each other’s positions over the past year, along with their familiar encounters in many tournaments.

Chen, however, does not want to let her guard down about just those three names, but all the athletes competing in the same number.

“All the players mentioned earlier, in my opinion, not only the three of them are difficult to deal with, but all women’s singles players at the moment (are almost evenly matched) and very difficult (to deal with),” Chen said in a press conference at Istora Senayan Jakarta, Sunday.

Talking about his performance so far this year, Chen said that he is still trying to recover his stamina which is a little sluggish due to the consecutive tournaments he has played.

“In 2023, I’m still trying to recover from the previous matches that were not good and now I got the Indonesia Open, this makes me more confident and I feel the target is clearer for the future,” Chen said.

“But if we talk about (targets) until the end of 2023, I don’t have any further (detailed) plans, so every tournament I hope that I can always perform better,” added the world number four women’s singles.

Chen has just claimed victory over Spanish badminton player Carolina Marin in the Indonesia Open 2023 final with a score of 21-18, 21-19.

Chen admitted that the match was quite tough, with Marin who is now in her best form after the severe injury she suffered three to four years ago.

Chen was even left far behind 10-16 from Marin. However, his winning mentality eventually led him to the highest podium of this year’s third BWF Super 1000 tournament.
