JABAR EKSPRES – Indonesian Foreign Minister, Retno Marsudi, explained the role of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in maintaining peace and stability as a keynote speaker at the Oslo Forum in Norway on Tuesday (6/13).
The annual forum on conflict resolution and peace was attended by peace practitioners from governments, international organizations, academics, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs).
“The information I conveyed at the meeting was mainly how ASEAN uses its power and politics to make Southeast Asia a stable and peaceful region,” Retno said when delivering a press statement online on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ YouTube channel.
In playing this role, she said, ASEAN continues to work hard to promote a culture of dialogue which is very important to build mutual trust and resolve conflicts.
“I emphasize that this culture of dialogue means being ready to listen, ready to consider the views of the other side, ready to embrace a win-win paradigm, and ready to stand as equals,” Retno said.

This culture is also carried by ASEAN in various ASEAN-led mechanisms.
ASEAN also continues to strive to build an inclusive culture, which is part of the association’s DNA.
Retno acknowledged that amidst the sharp rivalry of major powers, everything continues to be politicized and countries are forced to take sides.
“But ASEAN is very consistent to cooperate with everyone, not choosing one side and closing the door to others. ASEAN’s inclusive approach is strongly reflected in the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific,” she said.
Furthermore, Retno emphasized that ASEAN would continue to respect the rules of the game.
“The rules of international law of the UN Charter must be respected consistently, and this consistency is very important. Without consistency, peace will not be created,” she said.
“Consistency means that values and actions must be the same,” Retno added.
