Russia is Seated for Presidency on the United Nations Security Council This Month

JABAR EKSPRES – Russia has taken over UN Security Council’s presidency this month, April, based on each month’s rotation – in English language – alphabetical order.

February last year, Russia held UNSC’s presidency – when they launched a full-scale invasion against Ukraine.

Both Ukraine and the United States have warned giving the presidency to Russia would provide Vladimir Putin a big platform to spread false information about the ongoing war.

Russian Ambassador Vasily Nebenzia hammered the gavel – under the United Nations procedure – as the country took control of the council. Primarily has a responsibility under UN Charter “for maintenance of international peace and security.”

Despite the backlash from Ukraine, U.S. said that they could not prevent Russia, as a permanent council member, from taking over the presidency. Other permanent council members are United Kingdom, United States, France, and China.

Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky has called for Soviet’s status to be removed as a member. But again, the United States said their hands were tied as United Nation Charter does not allow for anyone to remove any permanent member.

“Unfortunately, Russia is a permanent member of the Security Council, and no feasible international legal pathway exists to change that reality,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told to a news release.

Veto resolutions could be done under Russia’s presence as a permanent member on the UNSC. February 2022, the country decided to veto a resolution that, was initially, intended to end the Russian invasion against Ukraine. While China, India, and the UAE were all abstained.
