Palembang Immigration Tightens Passport Issuance to Prevent TPPO

JABAR EKSPRES – The Immigration Office Class I Immigration Checkpoint (TPI) Palembang, South Sumatra has tightened the granting of passports, especially to people of productive age, to prevent them from becoming victims of trafficking (TPPO) abroad.

“In recent weeks, there has been a lot of news about Indonesian citizens (WNI) becoming victims of TPPO abroad, related to this, we are taking anticipatory steps by conducting more in-depth interviews with passport applicants before deciding whether to approve or reject the issuance of their passports,” said Head of the Palembang Class I TPI Immigration Office Mohammad Ridwan in Palembang, Friday.

Granting passports more selectively, he said, was also to prevent the misuse of immigration documents to become Indonesian migrant workers (PMI) illegally.

Other anticipatory steps taken by Palembang Immigration officers, he said, continue to coordinate and cooperate with the South Sumatra Indonesian Migrant Workers Protection Agency (BP2MI), the Palembang City Police, the Palembang City Population and Civil Registration Office, the Manpower Office of the local province, and the Palembang District Attorney’s Office.

It also continues to socialize and educate the public regarding the dangers of TPPO.

Through these educational activities, his office seeks to provide an understanding to the community about the importance of becoming an authorized migrant worker if they want to work abroad.

By understanding the importance of becoming an official migrant worker or following procedures, he said, people who will work abroad know their rights and obligations as migrant workers.

“This is in line with the policy of the Directorate General of Immigration which supports government policies to prevent migrant workers from becoming victims of TPPO,” Ridwan said.
