“We collect the wood charcoal in the region from craftsmen up to 20,000 per week and it is certain that before Eid al-Adha the demand will double,” he explained.
According to him, the production of wood charcoal is from hardwoods, such as rubber trees, kecapi, and albasiah. This is because these tree species have good quality coals to handle livestock meat skewers.

However, the production of wood charcoal has been declining, following the development of urban areas, resulting in the shrinking of hardwood plantations.
“We bring in wood charcoal from various corners of Lebak, spending up to tens of millions of rupiah per week,” Hari said again.
Abdul Waseh, Head of the MSME Division at the Lebak Regency Cooperatives and SMEs Office, said that of the total population of MSMEs in this area in 2022, 56 thousand of them were wood charcoal craftsmen.
The wood charcoal craftsmen are the mainstay of the community economy in Sajira, Cipanas, Muncang, Leuwidamar, Cimarga, Gunungkencana, Banjarsari, and Cijaku sub-districts.
“We foster their business so that it develops and can roll out the economic income of the residents, so that it can overcome poverty and unemployment,” Waseh also said.
