China Acknowledges Challenges in Russia and Ukraine Negotiations

JABAR EKSPRES – China’s Special Representative for Eurasia, Li Hui, acknowledged that there are severe challenges in his efforts to realize negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, which are still engaged in armed conflict.

“The ongoing conflict continues to escalate. At present, there are severe challenges to holding negotiations and achieving tangible results,” he told the press in Beijing on Friday (2/6).

However, he considers his move very important to encourage the creation of a consensus that can gradually help resolve the conflict.

According to him, neither side is currently closing the door to negotiations.

“We believe that if we really want to stop the war, save human lives, and achieve peace, sending weapons to the battlefield must stop. Otherwise, it will only risk further escalating tensions,” he said.

Li has just returned from a visit to Ukraine, Poland, France, Germany, Russia and the EU headquarters, in an effort to find a solution to the ongoing crisis.

“China is still objective and impartial over the crisis in Ukraine by actively pushing for peace talks,” he said, emphasizing.

He claimed China’s stance has the support of the international community at large, including from Russia and Ukraine.

Li’s dispatch, which followed a telephone conversation between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, was met with skepticism.

The senior diplomat served as China’s ambassador to Russia from 2009-2019, so his alignment with Russia has been questioned in his efforts to resolve the Ukraine conflict.

“There was actually a lot of consensus reached,” Li said, when responding to the divergent positions on the Ukraine issue between China and Europe that he considered a major challenge.
