Joe Biden will not Apologize for Hiroshima Atomic Bombing

JABAR EKSPRES – US President, Joe Biden, has no plans to apologize for the atomic bombing of Hiroshima in 1945 during his visit to the city for the G7 summit, US national security adviser, Jake Sullivan said.

As one of the G7 leaders, Biden will pay tribute to both history and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, whose constituency he represents, Sullivan told reporters aboard presidential Air Force One before arriving in Japan on Thursday (5/18).

Biden landed at the US Marine Corps base in Iwakuni, located about 50 kilometers southwest of Hiroshima, Thursday afternoon local time.

Biden became the second US president after Barack Obama to visit the city devastated by the world’s first atomic bomb dropped by the United States in the final days of World War II.

Biden also met with the Japanese Prime Minister to reaffirm the strong alliance between the two countries.

He will visit the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum with other G7 leaders on Friday before discussions that will focus on key global issues, from the Russia-Ukraine war, supply chains, and clean energy, to artificial intelligence and nuclear disarmament.

According to Sullivan, China-related concerns and issues will also be discussed at the G7 summit.

“I think you will see alignment and cohesion around the essential principles in our approach to the People’s Republic of China,” he said.
