“I am deeply humbled and overwhelmed with gratitude to bring the beautiful story of ‘Moana’ to the live-action big screen,” Johnson said in a statement.

Auli’i Cravalho, the voice of Moana in the original version, will serve as executive producer alongside Scott Sheldon of Flynn Picture Co. Screenwriter Jared Bush is also involved in the new “Moana” project.

The story of “Moana” is inspired by Polynesian myths. It follows the story of a chief’s daughter named Moana who has a fascination with the sea. Although the Motonui people live by the sea, they only wade in the ocean for short distances.

Moana’s father forbids her to go to sea because of bad things that have happened in the past. However, Moana insisted on exploring the ocean, especially since the Motonui people’s livelihood was not good and they were in danger of starvation.

Moana also sailed to the sea to convince a half-divine figure named Maui to return the stolen heart of the goddess Te Fitti, which the residents believed caused the disaster.

Quoting The Hollywood Reporter, the animated “Moana” became a hit after its release, grossing more than 665 million US dollars globally and earning an Oscar nomination for best animated film.

Disney itself pioneered the strategy of turning its classic animated films into live-action feature films. This is a strategy that has paid huge dividends as in the case of “Beauty and the Beast” and “Aladdin”. Although some other animations that were remade into live-action versions were not as successful as expected.
