Saudi Arabia Welcomes UN to Finalize FSO Safer Tanker Oil Transfer

Jabar Ekspres – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia welcomed the announcement from the United Nations (UN) that it has completed the transfer of oil from the Safer Tanker offshore facility (FSO), which contained an estimated 1.14 million barrels of crude oil.

FSO Safer is a tanker that was an abandoned offshore oil dredging and processing facility in the Red Sea near the Yemeni city of Al Hudaydah.

Since the civil war in Yemen that began in 2015, the vessel’s structure has been exposed to moisture and corrosion and little to no maintenance measures.

A dispute exists between the Houthi group and the Saudi-backed Yemeni Government over ownership and responsibility for the tanker.

The Ministry reiterated the Kingdom’s appreciation for the efforts of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and the UN team in resolving the Safer Tanker issue, and voiced appreciation for the generous financial support from donor countries and the donation campaign they launched to end the threat posed by the oil tanker.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia became one of the first countries to provide a financial grant through the King Salman Center for Humanitarian Aid and Relief (KSrelief) as part of its efforts with the international community in resolving the Safer Tanker issue.

The ministry also thanked the Coalition Command to Support Legitimacy in Yemen for its support of the operational plan to transfer oil from the Safer Tanker successfully and efficiently.
