JABAR EKSPRESChina is calling for the resumption of grain and fertilizer exports from Ukraine and Russia, after the landmark deal was suspended earlier this week.

During a meeting of the United Nations Security Council on Friday (July 21), China’s Permanent Representative to the UN Geng Shuang underlined the importance of the Black Sea grain deal for global food security.

According to Chinese television station CGTN, Geng expressed Beijing’s hope that relevant parties would work with the UN to resume grain and fertilizer exports from Ukraine and Russia in the near future.

UN humanitarian aid chief Martin Griffiths said many people were disappointed by Russia’s decision to suspend its participation in the grain deal on July 17, 2023.

Previously, the deal signed by Ukraine and Russia and brokered by the UN and Turkey had facilitated the safe delivery of more than 32 million tons of Ukrainian grain to global markets.

Griffiths underlined that for 362 million people, Russia’s suspension of the agreement is a threat to their future and the future of their children and families.

“They are not sad, they are angry and worried. Some of them will starve, many may die as a result of this decision,” he said.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has urged Russian President Vladimir Putin to restore his participation in the deal and called on Western countries to consider Russia’s demands.

Russia has refused to extend the life of the agreement beyond July 17, 2023 saying “its part in the deal has not been implemented”.
