Indonesia’s Immigration Proposal Welcomed by ASEAN+3 FTT

JABAR EKSPRES – Indonesia’s proposal at the ASEAN+3 High Level Forum on Immigration Governance has received a positive response from other countries’ delegates, said Immigration Attaché at the Indonesian Embassy in Beijing, Raden Fitri Saptaji.

At the forum held in Beijing, China, on 26-28 June 2023, the Director of Immigration Cooperation at the Indonesian Ministry of Law and Human Rights, Heru Tjondro, proposed strengthening cooperation with domestic and foreign partners and international organizations.

Fitri stated, “Such cooperation is necessary because no single country can handle the problems and challenges related to immigration issues alone.”

During the ASEAN Plus Three meeting, Indonesia proposed to strengthen cooperation in information exchange and training in immigration.

Fitri, who accompanied Heru Tjondro as head of the Indonesian delegation at the forum, said, “We also explained some of the challenges in the field of immigration.”

Some of the challenges and threats discussed include conflicts in certain regions that cause people to move to other countries, the presence of foreign terrorists, illegal movement of people by sea, human smuggling, human trafficking, human organ trafficking, and transnational crimes.

The forum was attended by delegates from ASEAN member states, as well as China, Japan, and South Korea. The Indonesian delegation presented several immigration policies that have been implemented.

One of the policies disclosed was the implementation of visa on arrival (VoA) for 92 countries, visa exemption for nine ASEAN member countries and Timor Leste, second home visa, and golden visa.

Fitri stated, “These policies can boost economic growth, investment, trade, and business.”

The forum participants supported and welcomed Indonesia’s proposal.

Xu Ganlu, Vice Minister of Public Security and Commissioner of China’s National Immigration Agency, emphasized the importance of building a common understanding of international migration.

Xu added, “Capacity building of personnel through training in immigration regulation is also indispensable.”
