Verstappen has the chance to become the most successful driver in Austrian Grand Prix history after taking three wins, all with the Red Bull team, in 2018, 2019 and 2021, equaling Alain Prost’s achievement. Verstappen has also become the most successful driver at the Red Bull Ring by winning the Styria Grand Prix in 2021.
Apart from Verstappen, three other drivers on the current grid have tasted victory in Austria. Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) took victory in 2016, Valtteri Bottas (Mercedes) in 2020, and Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) was the winner last year.
In terms of team wins, Ferrari and McLaren both have six victories at the Austrian Grand Prix. Mercedes has a chance to match that feat after taking five victories since the race returned to the calendar in 2014.
The Red Bull Ring also hosts the Styria Grand Prix in 2020 and 2021, which is held one week after the Austrian Grand Prix due to pandemic restrictions. The Austrian Grand Prix first entered the F1 calendar when it was held at the former Zeltweg airfield circuit. The race was then moved to Spielberg and the Osterreichring in 1970 and was held annually until 1987. In 1997, the Austrian Grand Prix returned to the calendar and was held at the A1-Ring until 2003 before the circuit was renamed the Red Bull Ring starting in 2014.
