BMKG Records Four Shallow Tectonic Earthquakes in Cirebon

JABAR EKSPRES – The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded four shallow earthquakes in Cirebon, West Java, from morning to afternoon on Thursday (15/6).

“The results of BMKG monitoring show that there were four earthquakes (in Cirebon and its surroundings) that can be determined by the parameters of the earthquake,” BMKG Head of Earthquake and Tsunami Center Daryono said when contacted by cellular phone by Antara news in Cirebon, West Java, quoted by Jabarekspres.com, Thursday (15/6).

According to him, the earthquake that occurred in Cirebon was a shallow earthquake classification that was thought to be due to the activity of the Cirebon Fault.

He explained that the first earthquake occurred at 06.20.20 WIB magnitude 2.9 location 6.78 LS – 108.62 BT or 11 kilometers southeast of Cirebon City with a depth of 5 kilometers.

Then for the aftershock, continued Daryono, occurred at 7.25.19 WIB at the same location magnitude 3.2 depth of 7 kilometers, for the third occurred at 07.37.29 WIB depth of 7 kilometers.

“The next aftershock occurred at 16.05.57 magnitude 2.9 location 6.80 LS – 108.62 BT 12 kilometers southeast of Cirebon City with a depth of 10 kilometers,” he said.

He added that by paying attention to the location of the epicenter and the depth of the hypocenter, the earthquake that occurred was a type of shallow earthquake which was thought to be due to the activity of the Cirebon Fault.

According to him, related to the reports of residents who said that this earthquake caused a boom sound, it is very possible because the epicenter of the earthquake is shallow.

The sudden deformation process of subsurface rocks at shallow depths can indeed trigger the appearance of booming sounds. Several cases of shallow earthquakes that occurred in various regions also triggered the appearance of booming sounds.

“Cirebon is indeed an earthquake-prone area, BMKG noted that at least Cirebon has experienced destructive earthquakes four times, namely in 1847, 1853, 1971 and 2020,” he said.
