Consistency in Making Jakarta Fair the Largest Exhibition in Southeast Asia

Jabar Ekspres – Acting Governor of Jakarta Heru Budi Hartono said consistency in presenting quality multiproduct exhibitions has made the Jakarta Fair Kemayoran or Jakarta International Expo (JIExpo) one of the largest exhibitions in Southeast Asia.

“This year the Jakarta Fair is entering its 54th year,” Heru said while attending the opening of the Jakarta Fair Kemayoran (JFK) or Jakarta International Expo (JIExpo) in Kemayoran, Central Jakarta, Wednesday night.

This long journey, said Heru, proves that consistency in presenting quality multiproduct exhibitions has made Jakarta Fair one of the largest, longest and most comprehensive exhibitions in the Southeast Asian region.

Jakarta Fair originated from the proposal of Kadin Chairman Syamsuddin Mangan in 1968 and was approved by the then Governor of DKI Jakarta, Ali Sadikin.

Jakarta Fair, also known as Pekan Raya Jakarta, was inspired by the Gambir Night Market which was held annually in the Monas area. “In 1968 Syamsuddin Mangan as Chairman of Kadin proposed an exhibition event to increase the marketing of domestic production,” Heru said.

Then, the idea was welcomed by DKI Jakarta Governor Ali Sadikin who wanted to unite various night markets which at that time were still scattered in a number of Jakarta areas into the Jakarta Fair.

The Provincial Government of DKI Jakarta also determined that the Jakarta Fair would be held every Jakarta Anniversary on June 22.

Initially, Heru said, Jakarta Fair, which was an exhibition, was held in the Monas area until it moved to Kemayoran. Jakarta Fair continues to transform into a modern exhibition event featuring various superior products of the country and internationally.

“Since then, the Jakarta Provincial Government has set Pekan Raya Jakarta or Jakarta Fair to be a permanent annual agenda held in the framework of the Jakarta City Anniversary celebration which is celebrated every June 22,” said Heru.
