Indonesia-Malaysia Discuss Solutions to Prevent TPPO and Migrant Workers

JABAR EKSPRES – Director General of Immigration at the Indonesian Ministry of Law and Human Rights, Silmy Karim, met with the Chairman of the Malaysian Immigration Steering Committee, YBhg Dato’ Ruslin bin Jusoh, to discuss solutions to prevent Trafficking in Persons (TPPO) and Indonesian Migrant Workers (PMI).

Silmy said the state must be present in every problem experienced by its citizens. Therefore, he visited Malaysian Immigration to find solutions related to the PMI problem in the country.

“Our visit to Malaysian Immigration is to find a solution for undocumented workers from Indonesia who work in Malaysia to become legal workers,” Silmy said in a written statement received in Jakarta, Thursday (8/6).

Silmy said that one of the solutions offered by his party was that Indonesian Immigration provided passports to Indonesian migrant workers whose documents were incomplete, then Malaysian immigration issued work permits through certain procedures.

“Like whitening, so that Indonesian Migrant Workers can have complete documents,” Silmy said.

Furthermore, Silmy together with the ranks of the Directorate General (DG) of Immigration also visited the Malaysian Immigrant Detention Depot (immigration detention center) to meet PMI.

On that occasion, the process of making Travel Letters as Passports (SPLP) of the Republic of Indonesia for illegal workers from Indonesia for repatriation to Indonesia was also carried out.

“We obtained data that currently the total number of Indonesian citizens in the Malaysian Immigration Detention Depot is 309 people. In addition, the Chairman of the Immigresen Steering Committee also revealed that there are 11,000 migrant workers who have been deported from Malaysia,” explained Silmy.

Silmy hopes that prospective migrant workers who will work abroad can complete travel documents and requirements so that they can work safely and calmly overseas, and avoid the potential of being trapped in TPPO.

“We all certainly hope that all prospective Indonesian Migrant Workers can work well abroad and not become victims of TPPO. We ask that you complete the documents and also go through the correct procedures before working abroad. Do not be deceived by agents or brokers,” said Silmy.
