JABAR EKSPRES – Jaguar has issued a recall announcement affecting nearly 6,400 units of its I-Pace electric SUV due to a potential battery fire risk.
The British luxury car brand said that the affected electric SUVs will be recalled to replace the battery energy control module to eliminate the potential risk of fire.
The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said that a total of 6,367 units of the I-Pace electric crossover are affected by the recall. The affected electric cars were manufactured between 2019 and 2023.
In the affected Jaguar I-Pace cars, the high-voltage batteries can experience excessive heating which can lead to fire events.
The automaker is reportedly aware of eight fire events involving Jaguar I-Pace models in the United States, but no accidents or injuries have been reported.
The automaker, which is owned by Tata Motors, has not been able to identify whether there is a defect in the way the battery pack is assembled, but they have found a solution to the problem.
NHTSA said that Jaguar will update the software on the affected cars to monitor the battery energy control module. If the module needs to be replaced, Jaguar will replace it free of charge.
The installation of new software on affected Jaguar cars will be carried out at Jaguar dealerships through online software updates.
After software installation, if the battery pack reaches a point where it could overheat, the system will alert the driver with a number of warnings and limit the car’s charging capacity to 75 percent whenever it detects a potential fire risk.
The carmaker says that if the new software detects a fire risk, I-Pace owners will be instructed to return to the dealership for an inspection.
If the battery module or the entire battery pack needs to be replaced at that time, the automaker will take care of it and the replacement cost will be covered by the recall free of charge, the Hindustan Times reported on Saturday (6/3).
