World Drowning Prevention Day, Safeguarding Lives in Water

JABAR EKSPRES — On July 25th, the world commemorates World Drowning Prevention Day, a global initiative aimed at raising awareness and understanding of the dangers of drowning, and the importance of prevention in all communities.

Drowning remains a significant cause of death worldwide, especially among children and adolescents. Therefore, World Drowning Prevention Day serves as a crucial moment to remind us of the urgency to take action and protect lives in and around water.

Engaging in water-related activities, such as swimming and playing at the beach, brings joy to many people, especially during the summer months. However, it is essential to recognize that water can also pose a significant threat if precautions are not taken. According to data from the World Health Organization (WHO), over 320,000 people die from drowning each year, with two-thirds of those fatalities occurring among individuals under the age of 25.

One of the most crucial steps in preventing drowning is to increase awareness about water safety. Educating children from an early age about swimming skills and proper behavior around water is essential.

Schools and community organizations must actively play a role in providing water safety training to children and their parents or guardians. By understanding the risks associated with water and the importance of using life jackets or other safety equipment, we can reduce the tragic instances of drowning.

Additionally, having adequate drowning prevention facilities in public places, such as swimming pools and beaches, is essential. These facilities should include trained lifeguards or supervisors and provide life jackets and other safety equipment. Simple measures like these can be lifesaving for those who swim or play in public areas.

Supervision by responsible adults cannot be emphasized enough. Children or adolescents playing near water should always be closely supervised by parents or caregivers. Drowning incidents often occur due to a lack of supervision and attention from adults.
