More than 2.2 million people have been displaced by the current conflict in Sudan, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM) on Wednesday.
In recent months, disagreements have erupted between Sudan’s armed forces and the RSF over the RSF’s planned integration into the armed forces, a condition of Sudan’s transitional deal with political groups.
Sudan has been without a functioning government since October 2021 when the military dismissed the transitional government of Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok and declared a state of emergency, a move denounced by political forces as a “coup”.
Sudan’s transitional government, which began in August 2019 after the ouster of President Omal al-Bashir, is scheduled to end with elections in early 2024.
