JABAR EKSPRES – Ducati Lenovo team rider Francesco Bagnaia put in a dominant performance to win the Italian Grand Prix on Sunday, to cement his position at the top of the MotoGP rider standings.
After winning the sprint race on Saturday to move four points ahead of Marco Bezzecchi in the standings, Bagnaia had a perfect weekend in his hometown, the Mugello Circuit, by leading all 23 rounds in the main race and taking his third Grand Prix victory this season.
Pramac Racing team rider Jorge Martin shadowed Bagnaia since stabbing P2 after the opening lap, but the Spaniard did not have the speed to keep up with the pace of the defending world champion who finished first with a distance of 1,067 seconds in front, according to the official MotoGP website.
Celebrating his winning streak at Mugello by holding a picnic table and eating hot dogs with a number of fans on the trackside, Bagnaia is in control of the rider standings with a collection of 131 points.
Finishing P8, Bezzecchi is still in second place with a widening gap of 21 points and is overshadowed by Martin, who is three points away in third place.
“I’m very happy, of course it’s a perfect weekend. I didn’t think it could be like this,” said Bagnaia.
“The reason is that the medium rear tire is constant, but it was completely destroyed in the last laps. The job is done, now it’s time to focus on the coming week at the Sachsenring.
“But I will enjoy this, because this is one of the best weekends of my life.”
Meanwhile, Honda, which was without the injured Joan Mir and Alex Rins, relied on Marc Marquez, who followed the qualifying results in P2.
But a bad start made the Repsol Honda rider lose his position and scattered to the back.
