JABAR EKSPRES – Did you know that today, May 15, 2023 is the anniversary of International Family Day?

May 15 was designated as International Family Day by the UN General Assembly 30 years ago, on September 20, 1993.

Therefore, the first National Family Day commemoration took place on May 15, 1994.

However, unfortunately, many people are not aware of the International Family Day commemoration.

However, there are some groups of people in the world who realize and know about the existence of this commemoration day.

They usually organize various activities to commemorate it, as well as to make this commemoration more widely known by others.

This commemoration aims to pay more attention to how important relationships with families are.

A good relationship with the family is considered to improve welfare in family life.

This can be seen from various aspects such as health, children’s rights, education, and even social inclusion.

History of International Family Day

In the beginning, the United Nations was paying more attention to various family problems that occurred since around 1980.

Then, in 1982, the UN secretary-general received a request to do something that made officials aware of the importance of family issues.

Subsequently, under Resolution 29 of May 1985, the General Assembly considered the possibility of including a ‘Family in the Development Process’ agenda.

The aim was to bring family issues into global awareness, both for governments, other organizations, and public opinion.

Eventually, in a resolution (A/RES/47/237), the UN General Assembly designated May 15 as International Family Day.

Meanwhile, for this year 2023, the theme of International Family Day is “Families and Demographic Change”.

The theme aims to bring attention to demographic change and its impact on families.

The meaning of International Family Day

The commemoration of this day is very important for the whole world to be more aware of the role of the family in life, including society.
