United Nations General Assembly Adopts Resolution Condemning Desecration of Holy Books

Jabar Ekspres – The United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday adopted a resolution condemning any act of desecration of the holy book as a violation of international law.

The resolution comes amid a wave of repeated Quran burnings and desecrations in European countries, including the recent burning of a Quran in front of a mosque in Sweden, which received police permission, sparking international outrage.

Muslim leaders and politicians have emphasized that such desecration and provocation are not covered by freedom of expression laws.

The 193-member General Assembly adopted a resolution drafted by Morocco by consensus.

The resolution strongly condemns “all forms of violence against persons on the basis of their religion or beliefs, as well as any act of insulting their religious symbols, scriptures, homes, businesses, buildings, schools, cultural centers or places of worship, and all attacks on and in places, locations and shrines in violation of international law.”

On July 12, the Geneva-based United Nations Human Rights Council also condemned the latest attack on the Quran although Western countries voted against the resolution.

The resolution called for condemnation of attacks targeting the Quran and called them “acts of religious hatred.”
