JABAR EKSPRES – Indonesia’s appeal against a World Trade Organization (WTO) ruling banning nickel ore exports is in accordance with the rules and principles of the WTO Appellate Body, Foreign Minister, Retno Marsudi said. during the ASEAN Foreign Ministers Meeting and European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell in Jakarta, Thursday (7/13).
Indonesia appealed the WTO ruling on December 8, 2022 that stated the nickel export ban and downstreaming policy violated international trade rules.
However, until now both the Indonesian government and the European Union are still waiting for the formation of the WTO Appellate Body after the United States blocked the election of the Appellate Body.

In a bilateral meeting with the EU, Retno raised Indonesia’s concerns about the international trade Enforcement Rules related to the settlement of the nickel ore export ban dispute.
The EU launched a consultation on the possible use of the Enforcement Rules in the dispute on July 7, 2023.
According to its website, the Enforcement Rules allow the EU to enforce international obligations that have been agreed by fellow WTO members.
EU stakeholders have until August 11, 2023 to provide their views on the use of the EU Enforcement Rules in the case.
Based on the results of the consultation, the EU may proceed to propose countermeasures in the fall.
Measures may include the imposition of duties or quantitative restrictions on imports and exports.
At the same time, the EU will continue efforts to reach a mutually agreeable solution with Indonesia on the nickel ore export ban dispute.
