Tsitsipas eliminated from Halle as Medvedev reaches quarterfinals

JABAR EKSPRES – Stefanos Tsitsipas was eliminated from the Halle grass-court tournament in Germany on Wednesday as top seed Daniil Medvedev reached the quarterfinals despite admitting grass courts are difficult for him.

World number five Tsitsipas lost 7-6 (9/7), 7-5 to Chile’s Nicolas Jarry, ranked 28th in the world.

This marks the third consecutive time the Greek has been eliminated in the second round of the Wimbledon warm-up tournament.

Meanwhile, home favorite Alexander Zverev beat Canadian Denis Shapovalov in two straight sets 6-2, 6-4.

Zverev, the 26-year-old Olympic gold medalist, reached the Halle final in 2016 and 2017 but lost to Roger Federer on both occasions. He will next face Jarry.

Medvedev beat Serbian Laslo Djere 6-3, 6-7 (5/7), 6-3. The world number three overcame losing a tight second set to win easily.

“The grass is very difficult for me,” Medvedev said, as broadcast AFP, Thursday.

“You can actually play a perfect match and lose in two tie-breaks, so this is a little bit strange for me.”

“When I see top players like Roger Federer, from one side they can look like aliens but you try to see the best of them, and how they are capable on this surface, where sometimes it’s hard to beat anyone, to have so many titles Wimbledon, Halle, whatever it is.”

“It’s amazing and that’s what I’m trying to watch. Happy to win and looking forward to the next match.”

The former world number one and 2021 US Open champion was runner-up on the grass courts of Halle in 2022, losing to Hubert Hurkacz in two straight sets in the final.
