JABAR EKSPRES – The Food Security and Fisheries Service of Agam Regency, West Sumatra, recorded the production of 374.40 tons of vaname shrimp in the area in the first quarter from January to March 2023.
“The vaname shrimp production came from dozens of ponds,” said Head of Agam Food Security and Fisheries Office Rosva Deswira, accompanied by Head of Aquaculture and Capture Fisheries Agency Doni Afdison in Lubukbasung, Sunday.
He said the added shrimp were along the coastline at Gadang Ketek and Banda Gadang in Nagari Tiku Selatan.
After that, Pasia Paneh, Muaro Putih, Ujuang Labuang and others in Nagari Tiku Lima Jorong.
“Vaname shrimp farming in Agam is growing rapidly along the coastline of Tanjungmutiara District,” he said.
He admitted that vaname shrimp farming began operating in the area in 2020. The shrimp production is exported to several neighboring countries and some are also for the local market.
“The price of vaname shrimp is quite high from Rp60 thousand to Rp100 thousand per kilogram,” he said.
He added that vaname shrimp comes from subtropical areas, namely on the west coast of America to Peru.
This shrimp has been widely cultivated in Indonesia as an alternative choice after tiger shrimp which has experienced a decline in production since the decline in environmental quality.
“This shrimp is one of Indonesia’s marine commodities that has great potential and is promising enough to continue to be developed,” he said.
