After a brief illness, he died in a hospital, aged 46, leaving his wife, Reena Sheehan, and three children.
He had missed their US leg tour last year because he had decided to take a break and spending time with his family. But later rejoined the group to take on shows in Ireland.
The group was also supposed to perform with US singer P!nk at dates all on UK and across Europe summer this year.
Ireland’s President Michael D Higgins said he was an outstanding example of Irish musical success.
“It was a mark of the originality and excellence that Mark and his bandmates in The Script sought that they saw such success across the world, including six number one albums in the UK and a number three album in the United States – a truly remarkable achievement,” the president said.
Mark Sheehan was born on 29 October 1976 in Dublin, Mount Brown. He was married to Reena Sheehan and had three children. Before forming the band The Script, he was with O’Donoghue in the band Mytown from 1996-2001.
The band that they newly created, The Script, started in Dublin 2001 with O’Donoghue as singer songwriter, Sheehan as guitarist, and Power as drummer.
