Earthquake 7.1 Strikes Sumatra Island Triggers Tsunami Warning

JABAR EKSPRES – A 7.1 magnitude earthquake rampages in the Sumatra Island’s undersea, Indonesia. The quake causes people to flee to a taller ground after a warning of potential Tsunami triggered briefly.

A footage was released by Indonesian National Disaster Mitigation Agency showed people of Mentawai Island running and fleeing to higher ground. The footage shows that they were running on foot and by motorcycles.

People in West Sumatra and North Sumatra provinces districts and cities reportedly felt the shock and were instructed to evacuate to higher ground.

Centered 170 kilometers southeast of Teluk Dalam, at a depth of 15 kilometers. The aftershocks was also reportedly measured for 5.8 magnitude.

Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency lifted off the warning two hours after the earthquake. According to Indonesian authorities, a minor tsunami with the height of 11 centimeters detected in the Tanah Bala coastal area of South Nias regency.

There were no casualties reported, but there are several minor damages on houses and roads. This is reported by far the strongest quake in the Mentawai Island. Authorities urged citizens to keep on alert and be prepared over possible follow-up earthquake.

Located in the Pacific Ring of Fire, Indonesia became the country with highest seismic and volcanic activity. About 7.000 earthquakes are put into record every year with moderate intensity.
