FIFA’s Decision Has A Direct Impact On The Economy

JABAR EKSPRES —Cooperative Observer and Chairman of the Cadre Association for Socio-Economic Strategy (Akses), Suroto, assessed that the decision by the World Football Federation (FIFA) to cancel Indonesia from hosting the U-20 Football World Cup has the potential to impact the people’s economy directly and indirectly.

“In the context of the argument, economic loss, of course the last consideration. It will indeed have an impact on the economy of the people who directly or indirectly will benefit from the event that will be held,” said Suroto when contacted from Jakarta, Thursday (30/3).

In the economic context, he continued, what really matters is not the event that will be held, but how the economic strategic impact will be after the cancellation.

“Trade relations or economic relations will certainly not be just decided. On the contrary, what happens is that economic relations will emerge as a further diplomatic tool to modernize tensions,” he explained.

According to him, in the future it is necessary to prepare a strategy so that Indonesia’s economic diplomacy is used as an effort to improve political relations so that they are better.

He also gave an example of close relations between China and the United States in trade matters but are hostile politically.

It is known that FIFA removed Indonesia from hosting the U-20 World Cup after FIFA President Gianni Infantino held a meeting with PSSI Chairman Erick Thohir in Doha, Qatar.

FIFA said they would appoint a new host soon, while the competition’s holding date remained unchanged.

In addition, it was also announced that potential sanctions against Indonesia would also be announced at a later stage.

Through its statement, FIFA would like to underline that despite this decision, it remains committed to actively assisting PSSI, through close collaboration and with the support of President (Joko) Widodo, in the process of transforming Indonesian football following the tragedy that occurred in October 2022.
