The purpose of the treaty is to promote peace, friendship, and cooperation among Southeast Asians that will contribute to strength, solidarity, and closer ties.
By acceding to the treaty, the state parties must be guided by basic principles, including mutual respect for the independence, sovereignty, equality, territorial integrity, and national identity of all nations.
Parties must also respect the right of each state to maintain its national establishment free from outside interference, aggression, or coercion; non-interference in the domestic affairs of each other’s states; and peaceful settlement of differences or disputes.
