JABAR EKSPRES – United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Tuesday (8/29) reminded of the binding ban on nuclear testing for a nuclear-free world and he urged an immediate halt to the practice.
Guterres called on all countries to ratify the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, without conditions.
He made the call on the International Day Against Nuclear Tests, observed every August 29 since 2010, at the UN General Assembly.

“Since 1945, more than two thousand nuclear tests have caused terrible suffering to people, poisoned the air we breathe, and damaged land around the world,” the Secretary-General said.
He warned that this year the world faces an alarming increase in global mistrust and division.
“At a time when nearly 13,000 nuclear weapons are stockpiled around the world – and states seek to increase their accuracy, range and destructive power – this is a recipe for destruction,” Guterres said.
“A legally binding ban on nuclear testing is a fundamental step in our efforts to become a nuclear weapons-free state,” he said. “Let’s end nuclear testing forever.”
Meanwhile, UN General Assembly Speaker Csaba Korosi said every effort should be made to end nuclear testing.
“It is our duty to ensure that the ban on nuclear testing is legally binding for all countries. We need the right policies and safeguards to protect us from mistakes and bad decision-making,” Korosi said.
