“With its geographical proximity and cultural closeness, Hainan is at the forefront in China in interacting with ASEAN. ASEAN will become Hainan’s largest trading partner by 2022. Against the backdrop of the strong growth of ASEAN-China cooperation, we believe that the Hainan Free Trade Port will take full advantage of geographical advantages and openness and play an important role in advancing exchanges and trade,” Zhongjun explained.
China is known to be building the Hainan Port, which is planned to become the world’s largest free trade port by 2035 because it will have its own “custom” regime by 2025. Through Hainan, tourists from China and other countries can enter Vietnam, Cambodia, Indonesia to Singapore and shop at “free-duty” stores up to a maximum of 100 thousand yuan (around Rp215 million).
Meanwhile, Coordinator of Political Functions at the Indonesian Embassy in Beijing Irwansyah Mukhlis at the same event said that through Indonesia’s Chairmanship of ASEAN in 2023, ASEAN will continue to contribute to peace and prosperity in the region.
“As ports play an important role in global trade, more exchanges and discussions, exchange of best practices among free trade ports in the region should be further encouraged. Furthermore, improving connectivity between ports is also very important for the development of free trade in the region,” said Irwansyah.
