South Korean, US Troops to Hold Joint Exercise in California

JABAR EKSPRES – South Korean and US Army troops will conduct a four-week joint exercise in a California desert next month, South Korean officials said on Wednesday, July 5, 2023.

The exercise will be held amid efforts by the two allied countries to improve their joint operational capabilities.

About 150 personnel, including from air assault units of the 7th Maneuver Corps and the Capital Mechanized Infantry Division, will join the exercise that will take place at the US National Training Center (NTC) in California’s Mojave Desert from August 2 to 31, according to the South Korean Army.

The exercise will begin with terrain reconnaissance and tactical discussions before conducting assault and defense operations for 10 days.

The exercise will also include training on field assault shooting.

The South’s armed forces have deployed about 90 to 150 special operations forces for regular joint exercises at the NTC since 2014.

The exercise will mark the first time it has sent a company-level mechanized infantry unit to the exercise.

The Army said they hope the exercise can train troops on the combat skills of small combined units and be an opportunity to improve joint operational capabilities.

They added that they plan to gradually increase the number and size of exercises in the NTC based on the progress made in this year’s exercise.
