Volkswagen Group to Launch 1 Million Electric Cars Based on MEB Platform

JABAR EKSPRES – The Volkswagen Group has reached an important milestone by launching 1 million electric cars based on the Modular Electric Drive (MEB) architecture, which is a specialized platform for electric vehicles (EVs).

The MEB platform plays an important role in the brand’s overall electrification strategy. It forms the basis for several models from various brands under the automotive group, including Audi, Cupra, Skoda, Volkswagen, and Volkswagen Commercial.

The MEB platform is a modular architecture used by several car brands under Volkswagen AG. Also, using this platform, electric vehicles are built in eight different plants around the world.

Volkswagen AG announced via its official Twitter account that the production milestone of 1 million electric cars has been reached with the help of five of its brands, namely Audi, Cupra, Skoda, Volkswagen, and Volkswagen Commercial.

Officially introduced in 2018, the MEB platform plays a key role in Volkswagen AG’s electric mobility strategy. With the help of this platform, the German automaker has successfully accelerated its electric vehicle expansion strategy and is currently the backbone for a wide range of electric cars.

A total of 14 electric vehicles from different brands are currently using the MEB platform, ranging from the Audi Q4 e-tron to the Volkswagen ID.7.

Interestingly, apart from Volkswagen AG, Ford is also using a modified version of the MEB platform for their Explorer electric crossover. Fisker is also in negotiations with Volkswagen to use the MEB platform for its electric SUV called Ocean. However, the deal between Volkswagen and Fisker did not materialize.

Vehicles using the MEB platform are equipped with two different electric motors, the APP 310 permanent magnet brush motor that can produce up to 310 Nm of torque and the newer AP 550 motor that can produce 550 Nm of torque.

The German automotive group is currently working on the next iteration of the MEB platform which will be known as the MEB+. This version will have a higher charging speed and offer better range than the current MEB platform. This is broadcast by Hindustan Times, Thursday (6/22).
