Martino Insists Messi’s Move to Miami is not for Vacation

JABAR EKSPRES – New Inter Miami coach Gerardo Martino insists that Lionel Messi and Sergio Busquets did not move to Miami just for a vacation.

Instead, according to Martino, the two new players came to the US to fight for title after title.

Martino, who is Messi’s former coach at Barcelona and the Argentina national team, said he had spoken to the owner of seven Ballon d’Or titles and former Spanish national team midfielder Busquets about their move to the US club.

“Sometimes in our world, you associate the US and Miami with vacations. And it’s not like that. They come to compete,” he told a press conference as quoted by AFP on Friday (6/30).

“They come after winning world titles, Spanish League titles. They will not relax. They will compete because it’s in their blood,” he added.

Martino took over at Miami with the club bottom of the Eastern Conference, having lost their last seven matches. They currently occupy the 27th position out of 29 participating clubs in the US League.

However, the former Mexico and Atlanta United coach says there is still a chance to get something out of his tenure.

“We are in a good position for the US Open Cup and now there is a new tournament, the League Cup, so we will go there. After that, the goal is to build for 2024,” said the coach who is familiarly called Tata.

Martino won the MLS Cup in 2018 while coaching Atlanta United and says he can’t wait to see what else awaits him in the US League.

“I see the league always evolving, a league that has a lot of rules, but it’s very clear. I like the complexity of cold in one place, rain in another, heat in another. The thing you can do as a coach is to think what else we can do on the pitch,” Martino said.
