Iga Swiatek Wins French Open 2023 Title

JABAR EKSPRES – Iga Swiatek battled past Karolina Muchova 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 to win her third French Open title on Saturday and become the first women’s tennis player to successfully defend the Roland Garros title since 2007.

The 22-year-old Swiatek is the third woman in the Open era to win the four Grand Slam finals she has played. The Polish tennis player added this Roland Garos victory to her list of 2020 and 2022 titles in Paris, and last year’s US Open victory.

Monica Seles and Naomi Osaka are the only other players to have achieved the feat.

Swiatek, the world number one, also became the youngest female tennis player to win consecutive French Open titles after Monica Seles in the early 1990s.

“I know I’ve said this every year, it’s not about performance, I’m very happy to be here – this is my favorite place on tour,” Swiatek said, as broadcast AFP, Saturday (6/10).

Swiatek’s latest title capped a dominant fortnight on clay in Paris, where she achieved her record 28 wins and two losses in five visits.

Muchova, ranked 43rd in the world, is the fourth lowest-ranked women’s tennis player to reach the French Open final, her first championship match at a major tournament.

“It feels so close yet so far, that’s what happens when you play against one of the best, Iga,” Muchova said.

The unseeded Czech entered the final having won five career matches against players in the top three — four of them at Grand Slams — after shocking Aryna Sabalenka in the semifinals.
