DPRD Leaders: Renovation of Damaged School Buildings Can Begin

JABAR EKSPRES – The leadership of the Surabaya City DPRD, East Java, has urged the local city government to immediately renovate a number of schools in the “City of Heroes” that have been delayed since the COVID-19 pandemic to begin in Fiscal Year 2023.

Deputy Chairperson of the Surabaya City DPRD, Reni Astuti, in Surabaya, Friday (5/12), admitted that she had received a report from a student guardian regarding a damaged school building at SDN Pacarkembang 1 Surabaya which has not yet been repaired.

“After receiving reports from residents, I immediately reviewed and confirmed the current conditions at the school on Thursday (5/11),” said Reni.

Through field observations, it appears that when entering the classrooms, conditions such as damaged roofs, collapsed ceilings, damp walls, low buildings, and flooded school yards when it rains are common sights when Reni tours the school.

There is even a makeshift classroom directly adjacent to the cafeteria. For this condition, the people’s representative regretted the condition of the school building which did not support the atmosphere of learning and teaching activities.

“So that’s the picture, yes, it is not representative and deserves to be repaired and has actually been in development planning in 2019, before COVID-19. But it was not realized due to the pandemic,” he said.

According to him, initially the school building was included in the renovation planning by the local Education Office in 2019. However, repairs were delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 so that repairs were not maximized and seemed only patchy.

Therefore, the Surabaya City female figure encouraged the Surabaya City Government (Pemkot) to immediately follow up to fix the educational unit which has 730 students.

“I see how the principal and teachers continue to carry out activities well, the children also follow the learning process. But in my opinion, improvements are needed to provide a more conducive place to learn,” he said.
