Psychologist: The Importance of Maintaining Mental Health During Homecoming

JABAR EKSPRES — Clinical Psychologist at Menur Mental Hospital Surabaya, Ella Titis Wahyuniansari, said maintaining mental health during mudik is as important as maintaining physical health.

“During homecoming, there are definitely many things that cannot be predicted, especially congestion points, so in addition to maintaining physical health, travelers also need to maintain emotional stability,” Ella said when contacted from Jakarta, Tuesday (18/4).

Ella said homecoming is synonymous with traffic jams, but because congestion points can occur unexpectedly, it is important to maintain adequate rest, pay attention to body condition, and also bring items that can distract travelers from boredom.

“It is important to bring supplies or anything that can distract the mind from boredom and emotions that can be ignited at any time,” she said.

He said each person can have different pleasures. For travelers who bring private vehicles, especially cars, he continued, there is a screen in front to play movies or songs.

“If there is a screen, don’t play movies or clips, because if we are interested we will be distracted, and dangerous things can happen, so it’s better to listen to music or at least just short texts,” she said.

Ella said the level of boredom, fatigue, and drowsiness, while driving usually appears when the trip is more than four hours. For this reason, when tired, it is advisable to stop at a rest area.

“Please play gadgets, call friends or relatives, buy food, sleep, and other activities that can make your mind refreshed and ready to continue the journey,” she said.

He advised travelers not to be too fixated on the target of arriving at the destination within a certain number of hours, because there will be things beyond expectations that make travelers have to be more flexible.
