JABAR EKSPRES – A new study from San Diego State University suggests that strawberry consumption is associated with improved brain function and lower blood pressure, among other health benefits.
The research, which was funded by the California Strawberry Commission and presented last month at the American Society of Nutrition’s Nutrition 2023 conference, looked at a small group of about 35 healthy older adults.
Participants consumed 26 grams of freeze-dried strawberry powder daily, equivalent to about two cups of fresh strawberries each for eight weeks. The researchers then measured markers of cognition, as well as blood pressure, waist circumference and more.

As quoted from the Good Housekeeping page, Wednesday (8/23/2023), registered dietitian Dr. Shirin Hooshmand, professor at the School of Exercise and Nutritional Sciences at San Diego State University, explained her findings.
“Before conducting our clinical study, some similar effects were shown in animal studies and some human studies, but different populations and different designs,” Hooshmand said.
“After strawberry consumption (equivalent to two cups of fresh strawberries) daily for 8 weeks, cognitive processing speed increased by 5.2 percent, systolic blood pressure decreased by 3.6 percent, and total antioxidant capacity increased significantly by 10.2 percent,” he continued.
He added that previously published studies have shown some acute and long-term cardiovascular health benefits of strawberries in different populations, so this new study confirms some of those findings.
