5 Health Benefits of Spicy Food Consumption

5. Good for Heart Health

Can you reduce your risk of heart disease by eating chili peppers? Science says yes. In 2011, a study by the American Chemical Society revealed the benefits of chili peppers for heart health.

Capsaicin and other elements found in spicy foods help reduce harmful cholesterol and improve circulation, both of which prevent heart disease.

That doesn’t mean you should start consuming chili peppers in excess. The study’s author, Zhen-Yu Chen, Ph.D., points out that moderation is key.

“We concluded that capsaicin is beneficial in improving various factors related to heart and vascular health,” Chen says.

“But we certainly don’t recommend that people start consuming chili peppers in excess. A good diet is a matter of balance. Remember, chili peppers are not a substitute for prescription drugs that are proven to be beneficial,” he added.
